Tufpak Autoclavable Bags Are Catching On

The 2009 ICT Buyer’s Guide and Thomas Scientific are both featuring Tufpak autoclaveable bags as part of their current product lines. These sturdy polyethylene and polypropylene waste disposal bags are available in vivid yellow, orange or red. Each unit is clearly marked with the biohazard symbol and instructions for use to comply with OSHA regulations. In addition, a temperature sensitive “Contents Have Been Autoclaved” message appears after the bags have been appropriately sterilized. This makes compliance easy to verify and enhances waste handling safety.

Updated AAMI Guidelines For Sterilization PCD Protocol

Process Challenging Devices (PCD) verify proper performance for sterilizers. The technical information report (TIR) provides reference and assistance to healthcare technicians when using PCDs to realize sterilization standards. The new TIR31:2008 updated AAMI guidelines for sterilization PCD protocol just issued replaces the 2003 version. Additional features within this revised edition include sections on ozone sterilization and extended cycles.

New Autoclave Safe Tools Introduced by Steritool

Last month Steritool introduced yet another addition to its stainless steel line of autoclave safe tools.  They are now offering feeler gauges that come in sets of 20 and are suitable for laboratory, R&D, and clean room environments.  Customers can select gauges that are laser marked in inches or millimeters.   These autoclavable medical instruments meet the same exacting standards as medical and dental equipment.  They are ideal for use in situations where ferrous contamination is unacceptable.

Creating harsh environments that pathogens cannot survive is what sterilization is all about.  Verifying those conditions over an extended period of time is absolutely necessary for safety when using medical devices.  It also gives operators confidence in sensitive lab work and equipment.  Sensors are used to measure required parameters during operation of an autoclave.  Kavlico (a global business division of Custom Sensors & Technologies) has developed a new line of sealed pressure sensors.  These can be used with a variety of different gases and fluids compatible with stainless steel operation.

Astell Autoclaves – Not Just For People Anymore!

The Phillip Leverhulme Equine Hospital has added an Astell autoclave to its inventory of medical equipment.  The hospital is a teaching facility which specializes in several fields including veterinary oncology and orthopaedics.  Having high quality equipment on hand to treat their equine patients is good for business.  Horses used for show, racing, and breeding are pricey investments.   Owners often spend tens of thousands of dollars on upkeep and training each year.  It makes sense to treat these valuable animals with care.  To facilitate this process, the hospital has selected the Logicolor Square Section Sterilizer.  The machine offers a 216 litre capacity and a Logitech touch screen controller for cycle selection.

Solar Powered Autoclave Praised by Jimmy Carter

At the National Conference for Volunteering and Service (Oct. 2008), former President Jimmy Carter praised the efforts of Salud del Sol.  This non-profit organization is developing a solar powered autoclave for distribution to impoverished areas around the world.   They had won honors earlier in the year for the successful implementation of their business plan.  The recognition from Mr. Carter was another well deserved accolade.
