Hydrogen peroxide decontamination in a new incubator product is safe, relatively fast, and effective. Introduced on June 8th 2009, the Sanyo MCO-19AIC CO2 Incubator incorporates this process as an option to help meet demanding sample integrity protocols in high-tech laboratories. Cycles using H2O2 only take about 130 minutes. This is a significant improvement over the 3 or more hours required using just heat sterilization. The hydrogen peroxide is quickly broken down into harmless water and oxygen at the end of the cycle. The interlock door enhances safety during this sanitization procedure.
Hydrogen peroxide is a potent oxidizer that disrupts the lipid membranes and any exposed DNA, as well as attacking other cell components. In less diluted forms than the 3% solution sold in drug stores, it is one of the most powerful oxidizers in existence. It quickly kills pathogens on any surfaces that it touches.
This is the first CO2 incubator to offer multiple levels of decontamination control with an H2O2 system option. Samples themselves must be protected from sterilization so that the particular targeted cells can be cultured. At the same time, these cultures need to be as pure as realistically possible. Any biologic residue from previous use needs to be thoroughly cleaned. The decontamination around each individual container helps maintain complete environmental integrity.
In the case of the Sanyo equipment, an aseptic atmosphere is maintained through an optional UV SafeCell system. It protects against any airborne contaminants without the need to perform a regular decontamination cycle. It operates 24 hours a day during incubator operation without affecting the actual samples. An alarm system is installed to warn operators if any sample should become endangered.
The air jacketed heat system with its dual infrared CO2 sensor constantly recalibrates and zeros the CO2 concentration in the incubator automatically. The robust sensor is accurate despite frequent heat and humidity changes due to normal use and access to the chamber. CO2 recovery rates can be obtained within as little as 3 minutes when set to 5%.
