Last month, STERIS announced the introduction of the company’s new pharmaceutical washer to the global marketplace. The Reliance 680PG offers manufacturers the opportunity to decrease energy and water usage while actually increasing the level of sanitation achieved. STERIS has designed this model to deliver a faster return on investment by adding features that can significantly reduce operating costs. Chilled water is re-circulated through the system to act as a coolant for the effluent. An estimated 36 gallons per cycle can be saved using this method.
Sterility is assured with two advanced monitoring systems. The first one ensures that the rotating spray arms within the chamber are achieving total coverage. Each item in the load has its exterior surface effectively cleaned as a result. The second system detects the presence of carbon compounds in the rinse water. Both detergent and dirt residues can be picked up by this TOC (total organic carbon) monitoring device. This makes cycle verification simple.
The entire Reliance unit is manufactured using best practices as outlined in the 2007 Bio Processing Equipment standard. These are the ASME guidelines for pharmaceutical industry machinery that govern such aspects as sterility, seals, tolerances, and cleanability. The washer can be outfitted with the customer’s choice of an Allen Bradley or Siemens interface. These logic controllers are programmable to meet the operator’s specifications.
STERIS Corporation’s 680PG also offers a full line of accessories. These are modular and can be added to enhance the performance of the equipment at any time. Each accessory that comes into contact with the cleaning solution is made of #316L stainless steel. This material is corrosion resistant and easy to clean. Glassware spindles are plastic tipped to reduce the risk of breakage for glass vessels. Because of the unit’s balanced spray system, the use of an additional screen to hold glassware in place is unnecessary. The TC680-PG transfer cart is designed specifically for use with the new Reliance model.
About STERIS
This company was founded under the name Innovative Medical Technologies in 1985 and the name was changed to STERIS in 1987. However, the corporation also has ties to the American Sterilizer Company which boasts an impressive 115 year history. STERIS has rapidly accumulated a wide array of product offerings through a combination of invention and acquisition. The company now boasts a worldwide market and a staff of over 5,000 employees.
In addition to washers and sterilizers, this corporation manufactures and/or distributes water purifiers, clean steam generators, and a variety of sterility assurance devices. The company also offers a full line of skin care products including hand sanitizers, body wash, and lotion. This may be what prompted the company to post a recent link to a rather unfortunate rap video about the benefits of proper hand sanitation. On a happier note, STERIS has a number of eco-friendly products available for purchase such as water conserving vacuum pumps and cooling kits.
